The Six Million Dollar Man Digital Board Game has been completely rebuilt. Taking the last years worth of techniques I've learned while coding several other games (ie. Bionic Crisis, The Mad Magazine Game, and Happy Days), I've revamped the entire game interface and made it more interactive and generally just more playable. Take a look and try playing with 4 players to enjoy the full effect of the new Bionic Battles!

I am currently wrestling with the code for the Happy Days Board Game Drag Races mini game. It's turning out to be significantly more involved than I anticipated. I really should have seen it coming. It'll be worth it when it's done though, cause where else are you gonna see Richie Cunningham challenge his own mom to a drag race?

I took a break from coding Happy Days for a while but now I'm back and I wanted to post a short update.

I stopped at a point where I was fussing with a section of code that was buggy and bringing the game to a stop whenever a computer AI player would land on a "White Space" and have to play a "Sumthin' To Do" card. You can see a screen shot of a small snippet of the code if you click on the image.

So, over the last couple of days, coming back to the game, I've found and fixed the bug that was locking up the game, and in the process found a number of other bugs in other areas that I was able to quickly fix. Next up I have to add code so the computer AI players will be able to play "Cruisin'" cards if/when they have them and then on to coding the "Drag Race" spaces. At that point, I should be ready to start adding sounds and post the game here to begin official Beta testing.

On a side note, if you're reading this and you have any sound snippets from Happy Days episodes, I need sounds for the game. I would love to get high-quality audio of Fonzie saying things like "AAAYYYY", "Woah" and "Nerd", etc. If you can help, please let me know. Just click my name below to drop me an e-mail.

Moving right along on the Happy Days Game adaptation. Here are some screenshots to give you an idea where I'm going with the layout. I've finished most of the setup code and moving the pieces around the board. I'll be starting on processing the spaces in the near future.

Squashing more bugs

The Mad Magazine Game

I've been squashing more minor bugs in the Mad Magazine Game. The most recent was a bug I found where if a player was stuck on the "don't move until someone passes you" space and another player passed them after landing on the "roll the dice 3 times and move forward" space, the stuck player wouldn't move. That should be fixed now.

Now, a bug squashing sidenote: every once in a while, I come across a bug where if a player is on the "anywhere" space and another player lands on the "everyone else moves back one space" space, the game would sometimes lock up when processing the new space of the "anywhere" player. I have seen it happen a few times while playing the game, but oddly, I can't intentionally duplicate it. If you come across this bug, please let me know in the comments.

Ok, I've added a fix to the Mad Magazine Game that SHOULD solve the "stuck in limbo" problem of all players landing on "can't move until something happens" spaces. Give it a look.

I got 'em today! They're in pretty good shape, though the board for Snow White is warped which may make it a bit of a challenge to scan.
Looking forward to starting work on Mary Poppins after I've completed Happy Days. I suspect the only part that will give me any trouble will be the final carousel spinner. Gonna have to figure the degrees closely on that one.

Looks like 70's Parker Brothers quality control was out of the office when they finalized the artwork for the Happy Days game board. In the spot where the Cruisin' cards are placed, they spelled it Crusin'. Don't remember that from back when I used to play this game 35 years ago.

I've been squashing bugs in the Mad Magazine Board Game. I found 4 or 5 non-game-ending bugs that I've fixed recently. If you spot any yourself, please drop me a line or let me know in the comments.

By the way, that goes for the Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Crisis Board Games as well. You never know when a small bug might rear it's ugly head.

I just discovered the existence of this game, and now I must have it! It's based on the "Mille Bournes" card game and uses the likenesses of Burt Reynolds, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Roger Moore, Dom DeLuise, Adrienne Barbeau, and Jack Elam. JACK ELAM! How can this game NOT be awesome? I love "Mille Bournes" and I vividly remember thinking this movie wasn't entirely awful (the sequel, on the other hand, was a piece of shit). The search is on!

Mary Poppins Carousel and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Games

Just won these on eBay in a single sale. Both are extremely simplistic children's games, but that should make them relatively easy and fast to code.

I'm really looking forward to coding the Mary Poppins game. Even though it won't be anywhere near as challenging as the three games I've coded so far, I used to love this game when I was a kid. I never owned it but I remember it being available to play at school during recess. Just seeing the playing pieces and board bring back certain excited feelings in me. I don't really remember playing it, it's more an emotional response to the images. Can't wait to get it, should be here in a week or less.

I never played the Snow White game. Never even knew of it's existence until I started this website.

Happy Days Board Game

I just picked up a copy of this game the other day from eBay. It came missing the die and instructions, but luckily I was able to download a copy of the instructions from BoardGameGeek.

By the way, if you've never been to BoardGameGeek and you like board games, you must check it out now and come back here later. It's okay, I'll wait.

You're back? Okay, good. Now more about Happy Days: I've been looking for this game for a while. I had it when I was a kid and remember really enjoying playing it. Simple mechanics but very satisfying to gain cool points. I was going to start work on the Barney Miller board game as my next project, but now Happy Days will happily (see what I did there?) take it's place.

You can now head on over to the Mad Magazine page and play the full game. You may or may not encounter some game ending bugs.

There is at least one game ending bug I came upon involving one player sending every other player back one space that I haven't been able to recreate, but I'm looking into it. Also, there are a couple of bugs that are actually part of the game itself where it's possible for players to all be stuck in a situation where no one can move because their space won't let them unless a certain criteria is met, and that criteria can never be met without someone else being able to move. This is a rare but very possible scenario that could also happen in the analog version of the game. I have yet to program around it and the game will simply stop if this happens.
